MacBook Pro 14 M5 or MacBook Air 15?
The $700 gap buys you three things: a 120 Hz mini-LED display, a fan, and HDMI plus an SD card slot. The base M5 in both is the same chip. So if your work is not sustained rendering or compiling, you are paying for the panel and the ports, not for speed.

Apple MacBook Pro 14-inch
Take the Pro if you grade video, export for hours at a stretch, or your eyes notice a 120 Hz panel.
$1,299
Apple MacBook Air 15-inch
Take the Air 15 if your heaviest day is a browser, an editor and a call — it will be silent doing it.
If you want the Pro for performance rather than the screen, the money belongs in the M5 Pro chip, not in the base Pro.
